EQ Psychology is a dedicated team of accredited psychologists, with comprehensive clinical expertise in treating a wide range of mental health issues. Managing Director, Elena Hey, founded the practice in Port Stephens in 2009, after recognising a need for qualified psychological services in the local area.
The practice has operated from Nelson Plaza Clinic – a GP Super Clinic – since its opening in 2010, and is now operating at a second location at the brand new Port Macquarie GP Super Clinic! Our skilled clinicians are registered and accredited NSW WorkCover, Medicare and Hicaps providers. We have expertise in a range of evidence-based therapeutic approaches, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Brief Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Positive Psychology, and Motivational Interviewing.


Elena Hey

Managing Director and Principal Psychologist, Elena Hey, has extensive experience in treating a wide range of mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, stress, grief and loss issues, and Adjustment Disorders. Elena has worked as a counselling psychologist / educator in both the private and public health and education sectors for the past 20 years.

Elena has extensive experience in working with adolescents and young adults, specialising in the assessment and treatment of young people with behaviour difficulties, adjustment issues, social / emotional problems, and stress disorders. Elena has experience in working with clients from a range of social and cultural backgrounds, including indigenous clients.

Elena is also qualified in the provision of forensic mental health services, with experience in providing assessment and treatment of clients facing criminal charges, or with a history of criminal behaviour, who may be struggling with emotional or psychological issues.


Naida Peart

B.A. (Honours) Psychology.

Naida has extensive experience as a Psychologist/Senior Consultant, and has provided treatment/counselling for adults presenting with a range of issues, including depression, anxiety, trauma, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), anger management, substance abuse, addictive behaviours, bullying and harassment, self-harm, grief and loss, adjustment issues and couples counselling. Her background also includes occupational rehabilitation, EAP counselling, Critical Incident response and workplace conflict and workplace facilitation and training.

Naida incorporates approaches derived from Positive Psychology, including fostering self-esteem, building resilience and developing wellness, into treatment, counselling and training/education, with demonstrable positive mental health outcomes for individuals and groups in both the private and in workplace settings.

Naida is strengths-based, solutions-focused in her approach. Therapy models implemented include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Schema Therapy, Exposure Therapy ACT, Mindfulness and Interpersonal Psychotherapy.

Jennifer Carter

B.A. Science (Psychology). Psychology Honours (Class IIA).

Jennifer has worked as a psychologist for close to 20 years in a variety of settings, with over 10 years experience in remote and regional areas of Central Australia, Regional and Outback NSW and Regional Victoria.

Jennifer has worked in cancer and palliative care services for much of her career and has extensive experience working with people dealing with chronic illness as well as those facing death, as well as supporting their families. Jennifer provides skilled counselling support for those facing adjustment events, including survivorship issues after cancer treatments and pain management as well as those with anxiety, depression, trauma (including sexual assault) and PTSD.

Jennifer’s strength as a clinician is her expertise in working from a holistic framework, and providing appropriate therapies tailored to presenting need, with grief and loss issues, as well as adjustment issues associated with bereavement, her particular areas of specialisation as a therapist.

Smita Arora

B.Arts (Honours). M.Sc. (Psychology). M. Philosophy (Clinical Psychology).

Psychologist, Smita Arora, has several years clinical practise in providing psychological intervention to children and families, adults and seniors. She specialises in the assessment (diagnostic, cognitive, behavioural, SLD, personality and neuropsychology) for both children and adults.
Smita has extensive experience in the treatment of anxiety, depression, mood disorders, adjustment disorders, Borderline Personality Disorder, work-related stress, and relationship difficulties.
In particular, Smita has a passion for early intervention. She enjoys educating and supporting new parents with the social and emotional tasks of navigating parent-child relationships, as well as assisting children in the management of worry and anxiety.
Smita completed a M. Phil. Clinical Psychology, investigating the role of childhood parental bonding in the young adult’s life. She is a member of the Australian Psychological Society, and she has a preference for working with CBT and ACT approaches.
Smita strives to maintain strong and collaborative therapeutic relationships with her clients, and empowers her clients to become experts in managing and overcoming their difficulties.

Dr Erik Carrasco

Doctorate (Clinical Psychology).

Erik is an endorsed clinical psychologist with over 15 years of psychological experience. He completed a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at the University of Newcastle.
He has professional experience in providing psychotherapy for children, adolescents, couples and families for Mood and Affective Disorders, Substance Related Disorders, Adjustment Disorders, Personality Disorders, and Post trauma and Stress-related Disorders. Erik utilises evidence-based treatment interventions such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Interpersonal Psychotherapy, Loss & Grief counselling, Relaxation techniques, and Motivational Interviewing. Erik also specialises in helping clients with Conflict resolution skills, Anger management, and Social skills training.

Roslyn Ramplin

B.A. Dip Ed. MA Special Ed. Grad Dip Psych. MA Health Science.

Roz is a Registered Psychologist, with many years’ experience as a  Registered Mental Health Nurse and Registered General Nurse. With a clinical focus on clients experiencing mood and anxiety disorders, and grief, Roz is particularly interested in adolescent mental health, particularly Borderline Personality Disorder, and Gender Dysphoria.
Roz uses evidenced-based approaches to therapy, including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, and she intends to complete further professional development in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy.
